In depth

Verdict

Small Stakes gets the vote over Goodwood March, with Jessica Wigmo, Jodrell Bank and Girandola others to consider. The selection has been guilty of a string of near misses in the past, but this looks another sound opportunity for Peter Makin's colt to put matters right. He was rather unlucky at Warwick 16 days ago, meeting trouble in running before finishing fast in third behind Brigadore, and a similar performance today will surely be enough. With plenty going for him here, not least the ground, he can give Seb Sanders another winner. Goodwood March had excuses last time as well, as the bit slipped through his mouth, but he was only beaten in a photo at Bath the time before, so warrants consideration. He had Jessica Wigmo right behind in third then, and should hold Tony Carroll's filly again at least. Jodrell Bank is relatively inexperienced and has been a bit too keen on limited evidence, and Girandola looks like he needs a mile already. Small Stakes has the form to win this and is the pick.
