Verdict
Prince of Gold gets a tentative vote over Roman Empire, Abelard and Zagala in the first of eight races on the new Polytrack. Prince of Gold has run at Wolverhampton before but will be having his first try on the new surface. Although all his wins have been over either seven furlongs or a mile in the past, Reg Hollinshead's charge has shown enough speed in better races than this in the summer to warrant support today. A repeat of his second at York the time before last would be enough to see him home, and this faster surface should suit him judged on his poor turf effort on soft ground at Catterick on Saturday. Roman Empire only scrambled home at Newcastle last time but has won on this surface at Lingfield so will be a danger, while Abelard showed signs of a return to form at Newcastle but looks held by the selection on aline through Playful Dane. Zagala and Legal Set are worthy of a mention as well, but Prince of Gold is the pick on past form.
