In depth

Verdict

JAN MAYEN can build on her debut experience to go one better at the second time of asking at the expense of Riviera Chic although Quarante Deux and Summer Sunrise are interesting on debut. A shade unusually, the two newcomers both wear tongue ties for their racecourse bows but both represent capable yards and make some appeal on paper. Quarante Deux has presumably had his problems as the gelding makes a belated debut but he made six figures as a yearling and is related to Group winners. Major Lawrence has been frustrating to follow and hasn't appeared very willing on occasion so has plenty to prove whilst the connections of Riviera Chic have resorted to headgear in the attempt to get a win out of her. She has ability, her yard has been amongst the winners and she should have more to offer. Another filly with more to offer is Jan Mayen and Mark Johnston's daughter of Halling went close to making the perfect start to her career when narrowly denied at Kempton. It was a bunch finish and the bare form may not amount to a great deal but she can be expected to improve for the experience and could go one better.
