In depth

Verdict

STREET POWER has a fifty percent strike rate on artificial surfaces and can enhance that here ahead of likely dangers Ektimaal and The Kyllachy Kid. Jeremy Gask's gelding has done nothing but improve and took a Kempton handicap off 80 on his penultimate outing, pulling clear of the field in a style that suggested the best was yet to come and despite being beaten off this revised mark of 88 since then that was behind the smart Jaconet and compensation awaits. Today's trip of seven furlongs looks ideal for the four-year-old whose style of racing should be suited by the likely fast pace and Steve Drowne can time his challenge to perfection by picking them all off late on. Ektimaal was sent off a warm order at Lingfield last time but failed to land a blow over six furlongs despite having bounced back to form over the trip prior to that. The feeling is that Ed Dunlop's gelding is better at this distance having gained four of his five victories over it, the last of which coming here off just a 1lb lower mark, and although that success was over two years ago the horse appears to be returning to a similar sort of form and with Hayley Turner up the six-year-old rates a live danger to our selection if finding the gaps. The Kyllachy Kid is yet another in-form horse taking part in this valuable race having won over course and distance last time. That was a game effort from Steve Gollings' inmate as he fended off a host of late challenges, although the fact that the first four were covered by around a length suggests the 2lb rise given to Ian Mongan's mount is no better than fair and this is probably a stronger race, so he looks up against it this time. David Barron's Carnivore has a course and distance success to his name off just 3lb lower but may just lack the pace to trouble the judge against this stronger opposition, despite having won convincingly when last seen at Redcar in September, so a bigger danger may come from Southandwest who bounced back to form at Lingfield last time when taking second off this mark of 77. Stan Moore's horse won a course and distance handicap off 82 at the start of the year so there's no doubting the gelding is well handicapped if his handler has him back to anything like his best and this five-year-old is another who must have a chance. Cases can also be made for the once classy Beckermet and Tim Easterby's Malcheek but in this wide-open race we'll side with Street Power to score.
