          Verdict

          Darkness is the only one of David O’Meara’s four entries not to have won over the course and distance but he has the best draw of the quartet and was hot on the heels of the Charlie Johnston pair THE GATEKEEPER and Dutch Decoy when fourth in the Golden Mile at Goodwood last month. However, the Middleham Park runner has come on in leaps and bounds this year and seems suited by a mile nowadays – the booking of William Buick is a positive. Joe Fanning rode the selection at Goodwood but now switches to Spirit Catcher, penalised for winning easily at Ripon five days ago. Ropey Guest and Northern Express have won over a mile but may be best over 7f, though the latter has an enviable record here and La Trinidad also thrives on the Knavesmire. A case can also be made for recent Newmarket second Master Richard in first-time cheekpieces as he’s a course and distance winner along with the last two winners of this, Blue For You and Cruyff Turn, and Eilean Dubh. Sonny Liston is another who could figure if in the mood while Akhu Najla was an eye-catcher at Ascot. Terwada is on a hat-trick but upped in grade and carries a penalty.
