WWE No Mercy: Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio starred in 2008
Relive the previous No Mercy ahead of Sunday's big show
Saturday 8 October 2016 11:53, UK
Sunday's WWE No Mercy pay-per-view will focus on AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose and John Cena - but last time out it was Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels and Rey Mysterio who shone.
Last time out was in 2008, when Triple H was WWE Champion, Undertaker wrestled regularly, and Matt and Jeff Hardy were staples of WWE.
Refresh your memory of the previous No Mercy below, before watching this year's Smackdown-exclusive show, live on Sky Sports Box Office (channel 491) at 1am on Sunday night.
Jeff Hardy loses…
Hardy's pursuit of a maiden WWE Championship went on in Portland as Triple H secured victory from the jaws of defeat. The Game looked done when Hardy countered a Pedigree and planted him with a Twist of Fate, before performing a Swanton Bomb from the top rope. Yet, the then 12-time world champion - and now 14-time world champion - turned Hardy's pinfall into one of his own to retain the strap. The Charismatic Enigma finally became world champion for the first time at Armageddon in December, though, after outgunning Triple H and Edge in a Triple Threat.
But Matt Hardy wins
Jeff's older brother, Matt, kept hold of his ECW Championship at No Mercy, however, after wriggling free of Mark Henry's World's Strongest Slam and hitting the powerhouse with a Twist of Fate. Jealousy soon got the better of Matt, though, who, frustrated at "sharing the spotlight" with Jeff, mixed defending the ECW title with a series of heinous attacks on his sibling, as he revealed following his Royal Rumble defeat to Jack Swagger in January 2009. Matt appeared later in that show to clobber Jeff with a steel chair, costing his sibling his world championship match against Edge.
Jericho knocks down Michaels
No Mercy's main event pitted reigning World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho against Shawn Michaels in a Ladder Match, the latest chapter in a heated rivalry which began when Y2J hurled The Icon through his Jeritron. The pair traded wins at the Great American Bash and Unforgiven, but their third installment was probably the best - Y2J emerging victorious when he head-butted Michaels off the ladder before retrieving his championship belt. The clash was named Match of the Year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, while their entire beef won them Feud of the Year.
Batista earns shot at Y2J
Jericho had little time to celebrate his triumph before he had to make plans for Batista, The Animal having beaten JBL with a Batista Bomb in a no 1 contenders match at No Mercy to become next in line for Y2J's belt. Batista won said belt at Cyber Sunday in a match refereed by "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, but lost it to Jericho on Raw soon after when The Ayatollah of Rock 'n' Rolla escaped a steel cage. Batista, like Jericho, is a six-time world champion, though with his acting career skyrocketing - Spectre, Guardians of the Galaxy, to name but two - he may not find time for another reign.
Big Show KOs Undertaker
It's not often that The Phenom is left seeing stars but he was at No Mercy. Big Show detached a turnbuckle pad and hammered Undertaker's head into the exposed area before administering one punch to the front of his skull and another to the back and forcing the referee to stop the fight. Undertaker would earn revenge by downing The World's Largest Athlete in Last Man Standing, Casket and Steel Cage Matches before the year was out, though Show prevailed in their most recent singles skirmish, on an episode of Smackdown at London's O2 Arena in April 2009.
Mysterio maintains mask
The Master of the 619 would have been forced to remove his mask had he lost to Kane at No Mercy - but he very nearly lost it during the bout, with The Big Red Monster frequently attempting to rip it off. Kane's hopes of exposing Mysterio's face ended, though, when he cracked the lucha libre expert with a chair to lose via disqualification. Kane was not the only WWE Superstar to attempt to de-mask Mysterio - Jericho tried and failed at The Bash in June 2009 when he peeled off his foe's veneer only to see the high-flyer wearing a second mask. So shocked was Y2J, he was promptly pinned.
