Verdict
Marble Sands was a fair fifth in the Ballymore and is worth a try over this longer trip. Iroko also goes over 3m for the first time having rattled up a hat-trick in handicaps but Maximilian is possibly more interesting as he’s only been beaten once so far under Rules and got the better of STAY AWAY FAY, Hurricane Bay and Twig in a Grade 2 at Doncaster when last seen. Paul Nicholls’ gelding took a big step forward in the Albert Bartlett last month, however, staying on strongly in the closing stages having been prominent throughout. He’s had just the three runs under Rules so far so there is almost certainly more to come. Lucinda Russell won this with Ahoy Senor in 2021 and her mare Apple Away is tough and genuine while Grey Dawning has done nothing but improve since a beaten favourite here in November on his hurdles bow. Absolute Notions was only beaten a length-and-a-half in a Grade 1 at Leopoardstown last time so can’t be left out of calculations.
