Verdict

Irish-trained runners have won three of the last four renewals but Jim Bolger's Herald The Dawn is their only representative this year and he appears to have a lot on his plate under a penalty. Ribchester also has 5lb extra but he was third in the 2,000 Guineas so is obviously talented. Gifted Master only has a 3lb penalty for his Group 3 victory on this track and stepping up from 6f won't be a problem as he won over this trip and a mile last year. Castle Harbour won a very competitive-looking handicap at York on only his second start but that form isn't looking as good now as it did at the time and he'll need to find more. Ibn Malik made all in the European Free Handicap on his reappearance but was beaten by Gifted Master at Newmarket in the autumn and Paul Hanagan prefers THIKRIYAAT. He is defending an unbeaten record but has only won his two races this season at Newmarket by narrow margins. However, Sir Michael Stoute's gelding has a good attitude and appeals as the type who will find more when required so, with no doubts surrounding the surface and over his best trip, he gets a tentative vote.
