Verdict

Aiden O'Brien has won this race twice in the last three years but he doesn't appear to hold the strongest of hands today and so we will instead side with Desert Dew ahead of Zaham. The last-named, representing Mark Johnston, has scored in gritty fashion on his last two starts, the latter a solid contest at Epsom. However he steps up into Listed class today and there are some more apparent dangers in this contest. Habalwatan returns from a sauntering holiday to Italy where he ran a stinker but Clive Brittain's runner cannot be ruled out, however we will side with Desert Dew. He didn't get the clearest of runs at Chester last time out and may be better suited by today's more conventional track. He will handle any rain that comes before the race and this 250,000 guineas son of Indian Ridge can pay back some more of that hefty fee. Ascalon is unexposed and the booking of Mick Kinane takes the eye, whilst Glen Nevis and Rallying Cry represent Godolphin. The latter looks the pick on jockey bookings but that can often mislead. Champery looks a very progressive three-year-old and must be high on anyone's shortlist but it will need a tremendous effort to give weight to the whole field. Trinity College and Supersonic Dave are two more for a now lengthy looking shortlist, however Barry Hills' Desert Dew gets the vote to get his head back in front.
