Verdict
St Petersburg is the pick over Collateral Damage, with Rio Riva, South Cape, Flipando and Waterside a few more in with claims. Mark Tompkins has his string in quite good form at present, and it is surely only a matter of time before he has a hatful of winners. With that in mind it could be worth siding with St Petersburg who is lightly raced this term, having returned from a break to run very well behind Smart Enough in a decent handicap at York a fortnight ago. He then turned out in Listed company at Haydock last week but failed to cope with the going. Even so, that will have served to put him spot on for today, and he gets the vote. Collateral Damage gets in on bottom weight here despite some fair efforts. Second in Listed company at York in May, he flopped on faster ground at Pontefract next time, but bounced back with a good run behind Rio Riva at Ripon despite not getting the best of runs. He meets that rival on 3lb better terms and can at least reverse that form. South Cape showed signs of a return to form last time, while Flipando is eminently capable but needs to come from behind. Waterside has in the main been a model of consistency so is also worth a mention, but St Petersburg appears to be on the upgrade so can beat them all.
