In depth

Verdict

Patternmaker has been runner-up in both outings this term and is poised to go one better at the expense of Disguise, Star Duster and Soul Dance. It could be significant that Alan Munro rides Patternmaker again, as trainer Rod Millman, with whom he has struck up a good relationship, has two runners himself here. However, Munro is obviously keen not to desert Patternmaker, having ridden the gelding into second place at both Thirsk and Nottingham this season. The son of Elnadim failed to last out the sixth furlong on both occasions, and the combination of a drop back in trip and faster ground will hopefully do the trick this time. Barry Hills has been in great form of late, and had a treble at Newbury at the weekend, so Disguise will be a popular choice. He was fitted with the tongue-tie for the first time when finishing second at Nottingham on his final outing of last year, and on breeding will be seen to better effect when stepped up in trip. Star Duster always found one too good last term, and as stated, Munro deserts him now, while Soul Dance's last outing was at Lingfield in February, and she is another that may find this on the short side. Hayyani was thought highly enough of to warrant an entry in the 2,000 Guineas, but his stable are only just on the way back after a spell of sickness, and in any case he will surely struggle as well over this minimum trip. All in all, the pieces should fall into place for Patternmaker.
