In depth
Verdict
Some disappointing sorts do battle here and it is with little confidence that Spring Breeze is taken to defy topweight at the expense of Northern Spirit, Savannah River and Duncanbil. The one thing in favour of the selection is that he comes from a stable that has been firing in the winners this summer, and Michael Dods' gelding so nearly added to the tally when beaten a head at Redcar on his last start in June. He was rather unlucky in running that day but ran on well close home and this further step up in trip is not seen as a problem. The fact that he is still a maiden prevents us from putting the mortgage on however, and only a modest interest is advised. Northern Spirit is in fact much better off at the weights with the selection, having finished third at Redcar, but has disappointed in the past and is no good thing to reverse the form. Savannah River ran respectably from five-pounds out of the handicap at Catterick last time and may fare better over this trip, while Duncanbil was trounced by Silver Sash at the same track and looks destined to go jumping sooner rather than later, as do most of the others. A tentative vote is given to Spring Breeze who can reach the frame at least.
