In depth

Pacharana completed a four-timer in low-grade handicaps under Jamie Spencer before a well beaten runner-up in an apprentices' race at Pontefract. This is the jockey's only booked ride of the meeting so Luca Cumani must mean business. Gaelic Tiger made a successful debut for Mark Johnston at Carlisle in August and might just have needed his comeback at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago. He will have come on for the run and should go well though MASTERPAVER (NAP) looks the one to beat. He completed a double last May and though unsuccessful since and 21lb higher he's competed with credit in higher-grade handicaps. Be Perfect gained the tenth victory of his career at Catterick and is only 4lb higher but does better on less demanding tracks while Peterhouse hasn't won for a long time though is back on the same mark as his last victory here in 2015.

Gaelic Tiger 2-1fav (9-7) Tracked leaders, ridden over 1f out, chased winner inside final furlong, always well held, 2nd of 8, 3l behind Briardale (9-6) at Newcastle 1m 2f hcp (4) pol in Apr.

Be Perfect (USA) 10-1 (9-2) Made most, pushed along over 2f out, ridden 2 lengths clear over 1f out, just held on, won at Catterick 1m 4f hcp (4) gf in Apr beating Sellingallthetime (8-8) by nk, 13 ran.

Pacharana 9-4 (9-12) Chased leaders, front pair well clear after 2f, stayed on final 2f, went 2nd inside final furlong, no chance with winner, 2nd of 8, 18l behind Cartwright (9-2) at Pontefract 1m 4f hcp (5) gs in Sep.

Peterhouse (USA) 22-1 (8-11) Mid-division, driven to chase leaders over 2f out, kept on same pace, never on terms, 7th of 13, 18 1/4l behind Cape Cova (8-13) at Doncaster 1m 7f hcp (3) gd in Oct.

Mysterial 66-1 (8-12) Tracked leaders in 3rd, weakened over 1f out, 12th of 19, 8 1/2l behind Archippos (8-13) at Doncaster 1m 2f hcp (4) gd in Apr.

Masterpaver 6-1 (9-4) Tracked leaders, pushed along 2f out, not clear run entering final furlong, soon switched right, ridden and ran on to go 2nd final strides, 2nd of 6, 1 1/2l behind Petite Jack (9-6) at Lingfield 1m 4f hcp (3) pol in Mar.
