In depth
Verdict
Smith N Allan Oils ran well in the face of a difficult task in a classified stakes race at Catterick last week and holds solid claims back in a handicap today, in a race where Redoubtable and Border Artist may provide the main dangers. The last mentioned has been running consistently well in similar company of late and is entitled to be thereabouts but may again have to settle for a minor role. A bigger threat then may come from David Chapman's Redoubtable, whose latest start at Chester is probably best ignored as he did no get the run of the race. Menai Straights, a winner over course and distance earlier in the month, struggled off his new mark last time and may do so again, while another course winner Pepper Road may not be suited by the drop back to seven furlongs today, having won here over a mile last time. The Michael Dods-trained Jedeydd has to be respected with the stable in such good form but preference is for stablemate Smith N Allan Oils, who ran better than he was entitled to last time and is taken to make the most of what looks a favourable mark back in a handicap.
