Verdict

Only eight runners are scheduled to go to post for the opener, a much smaller field than usual. Only one seven-year-old has won this since 1995, Captain Cee Bee in 2008, so history is against APPRECIATE IT but trainer Willie Mullins has won the race six times so knows what it takes. Paul Townend’s mount has shown himself to be the best 2m novice in Ireland this season with victories in the Grade 1 Future Champions and the Pharma at Leopardstown with Ballyadam, Blue Lord and Irascible all looking held on the form book. He also has form at The Festival having finished second in last year’s Champion Bumper, a rich seam for hurdle winners. Metier looks the pick of the home team having completed his hat-trick in the Tolworth at Sandown. He’s had a rest since but converts from the Flat have a poor record in this while seven Betfair Hurdle winners have tried their luck in this contest in the last 10 years and none have won, a fact that may count against Newbury winner Soaring Glory.
