Verdict

A median auction stakes gets proceedings underway, allowing some of the smaller yards a chance to score with their more promising juveniles. Unusually, there is plenty form on offer for this contest and Richard Hannons' Penny's Gift is selected to get off the mark at the second time of asking. Bred to improve with age and distance, the selection made her racecourse debut at Salisbury when third behind her better fancied stable mate Sun Ship. Green in the early stages, the penny appeared to drop in the second half of the event and she stayed on quite nicely. The stiff 5 furlongs here should play to her strengths. Although the form of that Salisbury event has to be tested, the fifth Desire To Excel had one outing beforehand in a Newmarket maiden, finishing third so the assumption is that the maiden was decent. Riflessione with experience under his belt could be the one to put it up to Penny's Gift while Forward Feline failed to step up from a promising debut effort last time. Kingswinfords' participation would have to be in some doubt owing to his second placing at Beverley on Saturday. Penny's Gift gets the vote to land the opener.
