        Verdict

        Vespone has found one too good in each of his three starts this term but is taken to go one better here at the main expense of Gateman and Parasol. The last mentioned disappointed at Goodwood last time and is surely better than he showed there, although there is a doubt concerning the general well being of David Loder's horses at present. A bigger threat then may come from Mark Johnston's Gateman, who is a consistent performer and can be relied upon to run his usual good race. However, the concession of 3lbs to the selection may be beyond Gateman and Vespone is preferred. Frankie Dettori's mount deserves to win a race of this nature and with the drop to an extended mile expected to suit he gets the nod. The Peter Harris-trained Leporello was a progressive performer last term and made an encouraging return when third behind Bandari (a winner again since) in the Huxley stakes at Chester. There could be more to come from the son of Danehill, especially if the ground dries out further. Duck Row is capable but does not win very often, while Quito looks short of the quality needed to win this. Sir Michael Stoute's Sublimity and Mick Channon's Checkit are worthy of consideration and have claims if reproducing their best form but Vespone holds solid claims and gets the vote.
