Verdict
On paper this looks a better maiden than last year but still lacking any potential superstar; of those to have raced KING OF REASON looks most solid and is fancied to see off Sophie's Beau and the most interesting newcomer Jay's Treaty. David Simcock has his yard in good nick and this son of King's Best shaped with promise in three runs last year. His experience of different racetracks should stand him in good stead and with the step up in trip in his favour he looks sure to run well. Unless there is a shedload of cash for Whisper Wind, the most interesting newcomer looks to be Jay's Treaty. This 55,000 guineas purchase (as a two-year-old) is related to winners over in America and with his dam being a decent sprinter herself he is probably starting off at about the right trip. Sophie's Beau steps back up to seven furlongs today and this 78-rated gelding should run well if the market agrees. Baxter and Thalia Grace need to improve on their first runs, Sard needs to step up massively on two runs last autumn (fancied on the latter occasion), whilst Frances Stuart represents a yard in good nick but she is bred to get a bit further than this and might just need the experience. Compton Park also comes from a yard riding the crest of a wave at present and this son of Compton Place is not to be ignored on this first turf start, despite his breeding suggesting six furlongs may be his ideal trip, however the tentative vote goes to King Of Reason.
