In depth
Verdict
A cracking event in which Attavus looks likely to have a free role up front. He is a credit to his trainer and is hard horse to peg back if things go his way, but he does look to face a stiff task giving weight away all round. The evergreen Granny's Pet, who seems to have been around forever, will be more at home over this trip rather than the six-furlongs he tackled at Yarmouth. He was doing his best work in the closing stages that day and he has already proved his liking for this track having been successful three times over course and distance. It would be folly to underestimate him. Oktan is difficult to assess. A winner of ten races, he is clearly no slouch, but there is a suspicion he may be best with plenty of give underfoot. Vicious Knight has been a disappointment this year, but if he could re-produce his effort behind Tillerman, over this trip at Leicester earlier in the season, he would be difficult to beat. Using the latter as yardstick, he holds Firebreak, but Tillerman has improved as the season has gone on and there may not be that much between them. Royal Millennium and Patsy's Double shouldn't be good enough on these terms, so the vote goes to Red Carpet, who has been somwewhat disappointing since finishing 5th to Golan in last years 2000 Guineas.
