In depth

Verdict

GEORGE THE SECOND can be first today, Marmooq and Bountiful Bay may challenge. The selection is one of the few that comes into the race on the back of a positive performance and there's plenty to like about his narrow defeat by Willhewhiz who contests the opener. He's well drawn, well handicapped, handles the track and is in form so makes a good deal of appeal. The ability to handle the track is something that East Coast Girl has to prove following two more encouraging performances at Southwell but we're happy to take her on on this contrasting surface. It may be worth taking a risk with Bountiful Bay though as Brian Meehan's unexposed filly was backed at big odds ahead of her run at Salisbury; that suggests connections feel that she's capable of going well from her lowly mark and a tongue strap may bring about some improvement. Marmooq has been in decent form on grass lately which bodes well for his return to racing on his favoured surface. He's yet to race at this venue and may be a pound or so too high in the weights but could well show up well; ready preference though is for George The Second.
