In depth

The first two home last year lock horns once again. Bigirononhiship beat JUST YOUR TYPE (NAP) in soft going on that occasion and was having his first outing since when second at Ayr last month. But the latter returned to winning ways at Uttoxeter last time and re-opposing on much better terms in this year’s renewal with the ground more in his favour, Charlie Longsdon’s charge can come out best. Red Giant finished well ahead of Duc De Grissay when winning at Sedgefield before finishing runner-up at Catterick while Southwell winner Classic Escape and Hexham winner Nakadam face more difficult tasks with the latter racing from 7lb out of the weights. Bob Mahler won the Edinburgh National over 4m1f back in February but has struggled since returning to action while Iwilldoit won over a shorter trip here at the end of last year and is 7lb higher.

Bob Mahler (IRE) 14-1 (11-11) Led, headed narrowly 2nd, shuffled back to midfield 11th, ridden before 14th, well adrift before 3 out, pulled up, at Haydock 3m 2f hcp (2) sft in Nov.

Iwilldoit 11-4 (11-10) Chased leader, not fluent 9th, led 11th, pressed from 2 out until last, stayed on well, won at Kelso 2m 6f hcp (3) sft in Dec beating Talkofgold (10-3) by 3 1/2l, 8 ran.

Just Your Type (IRE) 11-2 (11-9) Prominent or led throughout, mistake 10th, headed 15th, mistake 2 out, stayed on well after last, just up to lead final strides, gamely, won at Uttoxeter 3m 2f hcp (3) gs in Nov beating Indy Five (11-1) by hd, 10 ran.

Bigirononhiship (IRE) 5-1 (11-6) Chased leader, led 9th until after next, in front again 11th, joined when hit 4 out and 2 out, headed between last 2, stayed on same pace, 2nd of 8, 1 1/4l behind Crixus's Escape (11-7) at Ayr 3m hcp (3) sft in Nov.

Coole Hall (IRE) 11-4fav (11-12) Close up, not fluent 1st and pushed along, awkward 2nd, ridden to lead narrowly after 2 out, headed last, weakened, 5th of 11, 20 1/2l behind Rock On Fruity (11-3) at Kelso 3m 2f hcp (3) gs in Nov.

Classic Escape (IRE) 9-4 (11-3) Led and disputed, outright leader after 13th, went clear after 4 out, hit 3 out and stumbled, blundered next, stayed on strongly, unchallenged, won at Southwell 3m hcp (4) gs in Nov beating Manofthemoment (11-3) by 13l, 7 ran.

Gangster (FR) 11-1 (10-12) Held up, reminder before 13th, ridden before 14th, pulled up before 3 out, at Fontwell 3m 4f hcp (3) hvy in Nov.

Duc De Grissay (FR) 7-1 (10-2) 2nd until after 1st, chased leaders, lost place 6th, mistake 18th, modest 8th 3 out, stayed on well approaching last, 4th of 12, 14 1/4l behind Red Giant (10-1) at Sedgefield 3m 5f hcp (2) gd in Oct.

One Of Us 6-1 (11-8) Chased leaders, pushed along after 10th, struggling 14th, left remote 3rd next, very tired when pulled up before 3 out, at Fontwell 3m 2f hcp (4) sft in Oct.

Dino Boy (FR) 6-1 (10-3) In rear, not fluent 6th and 8th, jumped left 11th, headway on outside 14th, ridden before 4 out, well behind when blundered badly 2 out, pulled up before last, at Carlisle 3m 2f hcp (3) hvy in Nov.

Nakadam (FR) 16-1 (10-9) Held up, steady headway 16th, chased leaders 19th, travelled strongly behind leader 2 out, led briefly before headed last, ran on strongly under pressure to lead flat, held on well close home, won at Hexham 4m hcp (4) sft in Nov beating Buddha Scheme (11-0) by 1/2l, 9 ran.

Red Giant (IRE) 13-8fav (11-7) Raced in 2nd until leading at 4th, disputed lead until going on again at 8th, headed briefly 13th before leading over next, pressed 2 out and headed soon after, stayed on but no match for winner, 2nd of 6, 7l behind Lough Derg Jewel (11-10) at Catterick 3m 1f hcp (3) gd in Nov.
