In depth
Verdict
This has the look of a decent maiden, and Mutanabi displayed plenty of promise on his debut to suggest he can take first prize, Optimus and Lake Chini could be the main dangers. This Godolphin colt, who changed hands for $1.6m at a breeze-up sale in Florida, showed speed to overcome a wide draw here on his debut and although he couldn't match the late burst of subsequent nursery winner Wedding Party, it was a promising start to his career. He was blowing hard at the end of that contest, suggesting he wasn't quite at full fitness, we should see some improvement today. Optimus took a while to realise what was required, but was doing some decent work in the home straight on his debut here, as with the selection improvement is almost guaranteed. Best of the newcomers could be the Michael Jarvis trained Lake Chini, a well bred son of Raise A Grand, who cost 70 thousand guineas as a yearling., note any market moves for this one. It is a race where the betting could provide valuable clues, but Mutanabi will probably go off a deserved favourite and gets our vote.
