In depth

Verdict

A very interesting maiden for this time of year; newcomers Bromhead, General Slam and St Moritz could all be capable of scoring on debut, but it is the once-raced KAMANJA who receives the tentative vote. Light The Light has a tough task giving away at least 13lbs to all of her rivals so despite having shown ability she is passed over in favour of Kamanja. Michael Jarvis' filly was well-fancied for her debut at the track and she ran a fair race without ever threatening to win. Green as grass, she looks sure to have learnt plenty from the run and is expected to take the beating today as her trainer's only runner on the card. Brian Meehan doesn't send many out at this time of year but the ones he do run well and he saddles Bromhead. He is related to several winners (all at three) and this son of Johannesburg needs to be watched for market support. Fellow newcomer St Moritz, a half-brother to the useful Dream Mountain and the stables' Annemasse, needs a check, along with General Sam who failed to attract much attention at various sales last year. Rebel City and Head Down have both shown ability but each has had enough chances and could be vulnerable to a newcomer or an improver, and it is potential improver Kamanja who is taken to land the odds.
