Verdict
The last of the recognised Gold Cup trials. CLAN DES OBEAUX carries a Grade 1 penalty having won last season’s King George. He was only third in this season’s renewal but well ahead of Lostintranslation, pulled up at Kempton, when runner-up in the Betfair Chase in the autumn and the obvious selection on that form. Cepage, like Dashel Drasher who was due to run in yesterday’s Ascot Chase, is unproven over 3m but Secret Investor was second in this last year, though was well behind The Conditional in the Ladbroke Trophy here in November. Kalashnikov is a strong traveller with form at this level and higher but he’s another for whom 3m may be too far.
