In depth

Verdict

Legal Eagle gets the vote over Sir Gerry, Philario and Berbice, with Cee Bargara also worth a mention. It came as no surprise when Legal Eagle came good over the course-and-distance last time, given his earlier promising debut here behind Midships, and he is fancied to follow up. John Gosden's charge is earmarked for the Gimcrack at York, and is expected to take this in his stride, despite this being his toughest test. Sir Gerry may have only won a Thirsk maiden on his debut, but holds a host of big-race entries, and has to go on the short-list along with Philario who beat the more fancied Mazzanti on his Carlisle bow. Mick Channon has won this four times, so the fact that he relies on Carleton has to be respected, and of course this preview would not be complete without mentioning the fact that Richard Hannon has saddled three of the last four winners, so Fat Boy and Berbice need to be considered, with preference for the latter. Legal Eagle has a strong claims though, and is the one that they all have to beat.
