Verdict
Backgammon has already shown decent form for a maiden, and should be capable of getting off the mark at the third time of asking; Nadir and Thistle should give him most to do. David Loder's colt shaped well enough when second on his debut at Pontefract in April, and showed a similar level of form when third at Hamilton on his only subsequent start. That form reads well in the context of this race and he should take the beating here, with Seb Sanders an encouraging jockey booking. Seb had originally been pencilled in to ride Nadir, who ran very well on his sole start last year but was well beaten on his reappearance at Newmarket and may need a bit more time. John Gosden's Thistle improved significantly on his debut effort when second to the well regarded Eyes Only last time, and should be capable of finding a maiden somewhere, but River Nurey has had plenty of chances and is likely once again to find one or two of these promising types too good, particularly Backgammon, who gets our vote.
