In depth

Verdict

Marsad, blessed with a handy low draw, is taken to land this race for the third year running, with Mitcham and CD Flyer the biggest dangers and Zilch fancied to go well at a decent price. With the ground on the soft side, a low draw is often an advantage at this course and Marsad, who clearly loves Newmarket in May, is fancied to score under Paul Doe. His form tailed off at the end of last year, but that means he now runs off a two pound lower mark then when winning this event in 2002, and although a nine-year-old he showed encouraging signs at Ascot last time that he is returning to something like his best form. He finished fourth behind Fire Up The Band that day, and is fancied to reverse form with the winner, who is a very progressive sprinter but may be inconvenienced by stall 19 here. CD Flyer was only a neck behind the selection at Ascot and has since come out of the clouds to finish second at Leicester last week, so he looks a big danger, as does Mitcham, who is very well treated on his best form and was by no means disgraced at Kempton last time. Zilch has a good draw and Michael Bell's lightly-raced colt goes well fresh so if he can return to the sort of form he showed a couple of seasons ago he could be worth a small each-way interest at big odds.
