In depth
Verdict
Not the strongest of handicaps and one that can be taken by Maclean, with Apex, Just Tim and Solar Power likely to be involved. The selection has been allotted a fair mark of 76 for his first handicap, and the handicapper has given him a chance of progressing from three decent efforts so far. A length winner of a Musselburgh maiden in April, this faster ground will suit him even more and with Fallon up he is taken to score. Apex has been raised 5lb for just a short head win at Warwick last time. That was over seven furlongs and in soft ground and it remains to be seen if Ed Dunlop's colt will see out a mile, especially as he won't get his favoured cut here. Conversely, Just Tim runs over his optimum trip here and has a useful 2lb drop since his last outing, a well beaten fourth at Sandown. The combination of the drop and the faster ground will help and he can make the frame. Another likely to do so is Solar Power, who won a Kempton maiden on debut before showing up well behind Flowerdrum at Yarmouth. The ground was too soft for her at Ascot last time but we expect better here. However, for the selection we will side with Maclean.
