With Hms President entered in the 3.45 here yesterday and Haliphon engaged in the 6.53 at Hamilton, each-way punters may be disappointed. Prince Imperial hasn’t run since winning over 2m at Ayr almost a year ago and Soapy Stevens stopped quickly when favourite at York 10 days ago. SAM COOKE was beaten under a length by the latter over course and distance last month and is 3lb better off. The top weight is a bit of an enigma but should go close if on a going day though none of the others can be ignored.
Sam Cooke (IRE) 33-1 (9-0) Raced wide towards rear, headway over 2f out, ridden and every chance inside final furlong, ran on, 4th of 16, 1/2l behind Soapy Stevens (8-10) at Newmarket 1m 6f hcp (2) gf in Jul.
Soapy Stevens 4-1fav (8-12) Prominent, raced keenly, headway between horses over 3f out, disputed lead over 2f out, pushed along and soon headed over 1f out, weakened, last of 12, 13 1/2l behind Alfred Boucher (8-13) at York 2m hcp (2) gd in Aug.
Prince Imperial (USA) 5-4fav (9-12) Held up, ridden 4f out, headway 3f out, took lead 2f out, stayed on strongly final furlong, eased final 50 yards, won at Ayr 2m 1f hcp (3) gf in Sep beating Lucky Deal (10-0) by 2l, 4 ran.
Gold Maze 40-1 (9-3) Tracked leaders, driven over 1f out, kept on, no extra towards finish, 5th of 13, 2 1/4l behind Trawlerman (9-7) at Goodwood 1m 6f hcp (2) gf in Jul.
