In depth

Verdict

The market will be helpful here, but the locals are sure to fancy Lutea, who is the pick ahead of Bobsleigh, with Blue Leader and Davoski seen as other leading contenders. Lutea was a well-supported favourite on his hurdles debut at Chepstow in April after a bumper campaign that saw him win his first two races and take on Grade 2 company at Newbury. It might have just been that he needed the outing at the Welsh track, having been off for two months previously, but his tendency to pull too hard surfaced again when a well-held fourth behind Chef De Cour at Kelso next time. He looks a hard ride, but the drop to selling company is a bit of a surprise given his progress, and on form alone he has a leading chance. Bobsleigh also drops to this level after finishing fourth to another Pipe inmate, Tell The Trees, at Fontwell in February. Since then Hugh Morrison's charge has been kept busy on the Flat without success, and is looking for his first win in fact since landing a novices' hurdle for Amanda Perrett at Plumpton in January 2004. Blue Leader will do well to give weight away here, and course and distance winner Davoski's main aim will be to get round after being pulled up on his last two starts. He has taken on top company over fences in the past, but at the age of 11 is on the downgrade, and connections will do well to sell him on. At the age of five, Lutea has lots more time to come good, and is the pick.
