In depth

Verdict

There is likely to be plenty of pace on here which will suit Alphecca, who edges the vote over Middlemarch, Bahiano and Norton. The last named has been a consistent performer over the years and can go well fresh. However, he is now an eight-year-old and might just need a run to put him spot on these days. Bahiano had a spell in Dubai last month before running a fair race in defeat at Lingfield nine days ago. The handicapper is now starting to relent with him, but he does appear to need some further respite before he can confidently be supported. The same has to be said of Middlemarch, who is still paying the price for his early performances when he was trained by Aidan O'Brien. The son of Grand Lodge does still retain ability though and is a prime candidate to tow them along. However, he faces a stiff test in giving the selection 5lb and he may again be just short of the mark. Therefore, we stick with Alphecca, who makes his debut for Keith Reveley this afternoon. The Kingmambo gelding had just four starts for Sir Michael Stoute and created a favourable impression on each occasion. Another year on his back will have helped him strengthen up and this classy recruit can help Reveley get off the mark as a trainer at his local course.
