Verdict
Official ratings and proven rider ability are the criteria on which we have assessed this amateur riders' event and the selection is Chevronne ahead of Mac The Knife and Mr Belvedere. The selection represents the trainer and jockey team of Gerald Cottrell and Les Jefford, who always have to be respected in this type of contest. Having been radically upped in trip for his last three runs, on breeding Salisbury's seven furlongs should suit him better and, indeed, his best form has come over this type of trip. A return to that level should see him very competitive today. Mac The Knife's form has tailed off since his juvenile days, but, as with the selection, a return to his best puts him in the shake-up, with a similar comment applying to his stablemate Mr Belvedere, who races in first-time cheekpieces today. Of the others, Paso Doble was staying on at Goodwood last time in a similar event but his best form is over further, and Clann A Cougar has form enough to hold place claims. Overall, though, we will stick with the Cottrell and Jefford partnership to score with Chevronne.
