In depth

Verdict

An interesting two-year-old maiden to get proceedings underway with several likely newcomers including Royal Warrant and Swagger Stick but Farewell Gift sets a fair standard and should be tough to beat. The selection represents the powerful Richard Hannon stable and showed enough on his debut at Newbury to suggest a race of this nature would be well within his compass. Outclassed behind Nevesian Lad in the July Stakes subsequently, he should appreciate the drop in class today. Mick Channon's Saintly Place has shown only a modicum of ability and more solid claims are held by Alan King's Warm Hill, who lost no caste in defeat behind Go Bananas at Windsor last time. The Queen's Royal Warrant is bred to be useful but Andrew Balding's youngsters normally improve with racing, while Swagger Stick is likely to do better over further. All in all Farewell Gift holds solid claims and looks the percentage call.
