Verdict

Hard to rule out any in this small-field claimer however preference is for Critical Stage who has a fair chance at the weights and gets the nod ahead of Maria Antonia. The selection comes here on the back of a good second at Kempton and was only beaten half a length at the line. This useful dual-performer still retains plenty of enthusiasm despite his advancing years and would be a decent acquisition to any new yard. Maria Antonia is the obvious danger; Paul Blockley's course and distance winner ran well in defeat last time and had previously landed a seller at the course two starts back. That form is evidently fairly suspect but she shouldn't be taken lightly in this race. Simple Jim has a bit to do at the weights and needs to improve markedly on recent outings, whilst Matinee Idol is yet to win in 26 starts and can not be recommended here. My Friend Fritz is lightly raced for an eight-year-old but jumping may be more his game, and so we return to Critical Stage for the winner.
