In depth
Verdict
This is a fascinating opener to the card with Gallant Hero and Contraband difficult to separate, but we will take a chance on the latter. The selection was well beaten on his hurdling debut behind Self Defense and Albuhera at Cheltenham earlier in the month, but showed enough promise on that day to suggest he could be up to taking this. This Pipe gelding was a smart performer on the flat, but failed to settle on his hurdling bow, and if he can manage to do that here he will take a good deal of beating. Gallant Hero is clearly the chief danger and he showed a good deal of ability when a beaten favourite behind Beat The Heat at Aintree last month. He is another with good form on the flat, but he raced a little too keen last time at Aintree and was slightly hampered three from home, so is sure to improve and will not be too far away at the finish. Tasneef is the other one that catches the eye as he has shown a fair level of form on the flat and is sure to have been well schooled for this, his hurdling debut. He looks the best of the remainder and has excellent prospects of claiming a place. This is a decent race to start the day with a couple of fascinating prospects going head to head. There will not be much to choose between them at the finish, but the narrow preference is for Contraband.
