Verdict
Greenfield gets the vote here ahead of Nathos, with Lalagune, Spring Pursuit and Valeureux possibly proving best of the rest. The selection was good enough to be placed in the November Handicap on the Flat and his two promising hurdle runs to date have come in better company than he confronts today. The drop back in trip should be ideal for Nathos, as he has his debut race won easily until tying up over the final two flights at Plumpton. His chance has to be respected. Alan King's French import Lalagune is one to look out for in the betting. Spring Pursuit is a seven-time winner on the Flat at up to 12 furlongs and could have better to come at this type of level over hurdles. Ice And Fire finished second in a 0-80 handicap at Leicester on his most recent Flat run when tried in blinkers, but they are left off today. Well-bred, he could improve in this sphere. The form of Meltonian's Towcester win is nothing special, while Valeureux came good at Hexham in October but took a heavy fall when attempting to follow up under a penalty. He'll provide a good benchmark for the form but it will be disappointing if Greenfield does not prove too good for him and, accordingly, gets the vote.
