Verdict

The draw has been kind to Penwell Hill and the David Barron-trained gelding is fancied to make the most of a good chance to shine at the weights today. There are plenty of dangers though and it will not be plain sailing for the selection if there is plenty of jostling for position on the far-side rail in the early stages. Top Dirham appeals as a live danger as he is still very well treated and has already posted a wake-up call about his talents when finishing second on unsuitable ground on his reappearance at Newcastle a fortnight ago. While it would also be dangerous to rule out Captain Darling and High Cane, who have both shown up well of late and are capable of getting competitive granted luck in running. The same comments apply to Distant Country and Newcorp Lad, who are not out of this in spite of giving a fair bit of weight away to the majority of the field. So with fitness and a low weight giving every chance of going close, Penwell Hill can utilise his race fitness in very tricky handicap to fathom.
