      Verdict

      This is a tricky affair despite the small field as a number of the top Northern yards are represented by interesting newcomers but preference is for the already successful Spoof Master to be too experienced for Lovelace and Avertuoso. The selection has had two runs to date, finishing an excellent second on his debut on the Polytrack at Lingfield and then coming away for a decisive success on his next start at Redcar. That was a smart performance, and the manner of his victory, by a decisive four lengths, suggested a follow up with a penalty was on the cards. Mark Johnston introduces Lovelace, a son of Royal Applause, who cost 76,000 guineas as a yearling. He is out of a winning mare, who was a half sister to a five furlong juvenile winner. Although the yard is yet to spark, their runners still command respect at this early stage of the season. Local trainer Bryan Smart has an interesting debutant here in Avertuoso, a son of Averti. He was a cheaper purchase than Lovelace, at 30,000 guineas, but hails from a speedy family of winners, and he may have a lot of pace. Any market moves for the newcomers should be heeded, but Spoof Master is taken to come out on top.
