In depth

Verdict

Lord Du Mesnil’s second at Bangor in the autumn received a huge boost when the winner went on to land the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury. He’s a real mudlark so is certainly one for the shortlist here. Volcano loves it here and, though 10lb out of the handicap, could go well at a price. Nestor Park ran up to his best on his reappearance at Haydock and Notachance won this two years ago, though finished tailed off last year. Iwilldoit missed the opportunity to complete back-to-back victories in the Welsh Grand National last month but has to be respected but we’re going to give another chance to FORTESCUE. He’s back on a winning mark and the cheekpieces he wore when pulled up at Chepstow have been dispensed with. An earlier fourth in the Becher at Aintree looks solid form. Grumpy Charley has gone up 6lb for winning the Mandarin at Newbury but idled in front and is worth a try over this trip. Threeunderthrufive completed a four-timer in the novice chase on this card 12 months ago but things haven’t really gone to plan since and Guetapan Collonges takes a big step up in class.
