    Verdict

NEWGATE is taken to land this handicap hurdle from Gamma Velorum, Barashi and Hazeldene, in what is a competitive enough heat. The selection has hit form this spring, making the frame at Sedgefield before winning last time over 2m 2f at Market Rasen. Good or fast ground suits, he is only up 2lbs for that latest win, and his trainer Ruth Carr remains in good form so we'll side with him. Gamma Velorum is another who relishes conditions and this sort of trip, but a 10lb hike for his Sedgefield success looks tough enough to defy. Barashi is still open to plenty of improvement but would want a strong pace here to be seen to best effect. Hazeldene beat Solway Blue nine lengths at Perth last time and he was third at Kelso yesterday. That was in a maiden hurdle and Hazeldene has escaped a penalty as a result, so he has claims. Lawgiver has been very consistent just lately, but over trips in excess of this, and it might be a bit sharp for him here and preference is for Newgate.
