      In depth

      Verdict

      Though a three-year-old won this Group 3 last year, older horses have generally had the upper hand in the last 10 years and the senior brigade look sure to give their younger rivals plenty to think about again. Ayrad has won a couple of Listed races and was beaten less than a length by Kings Fete in the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood last month. Not So Sleepy wasn't beaten far in this grade in Germany last month and the filly Chain Of Daisies has a good strike rate and got back to winning ways at Salisbury last time. Foundation had classic pretensions at the start of the season but has proved a little disappointing, though is a Group 2 winner and was third in the Dante in May. ULYSSES took a further step up the ladder when winning the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood. He looks a typical Sir Michael Stoute improver and can follow up here, despite carrying a penalty.

      Ulysses (IRE) 9-2 (9-1) Held up, towards rear, smooth headway on outside tracking leaders 3f out, challenged 2f out, went 2nd inside final 2f, led over 1f out, ridden and stayed on strongly, won at Goodwood 1m 4f Grp 3 stks (1) gf in Jul beating The Major General (9-1) by 1/2l, 9 ran.

      Foundation (IRE) 4-1 (8-8) Towards rear, headway 2f out, soon ridden and effort, kept on same pace, 5th of 6, 2 1/2l behind Royal Artillery (8-8) at Haydock 1m 2f Grp 3 stks (1) gf in Aug.
