In depth

Verdict

Long Hop, Storming Bathwick and Erins Own are the trio to make the shortlist, with Long Hop taken to step up on a promising debut. Already a point to point winner, and related to the Whitbread Gold Cup winner Shady Deal, Erin's Own has clearly got ability. This short trip may not be in his favour though and he is taken on. David Pipe's debutant, Storming Bathwick is a son of Anshan and is out of a mare who is a half sister to the useful staying chaser D'Argent. That would suggest he would be seen to better effect over a longer trip also. Long Hop showed some promise to be fourth on his debut and being related to Turpins Green has the breeding to make an impact. He should have learnt a lot from that first run, and Long Hop is taken to show the benefit of that experience here.
