In depth

Verdict

Kydd Gloves beat very little when landing what looked to be a poor Sandown maiden on his debut and Godolphin's colt has been done few favours by the handicapper so preference is for another debutante in this grade Thunder Rock, who gets the vote ahead of Torrens. The last mentioned has gone up 5lbs for his win at Chester last week which leaves Richard Fahey's gelding with more to do but a bigger concern may be today's softer surface. Course and distance winner Pevensey is another that would want faster ground, while the Barry Hills-trained Astronomical has disappointed in his last two starts and may be best watched now. Hamilton maiden winner Toshi does not look to be particularly well treated and of more interest may be Newbury scorer Admiral's Cruise, who does not have a great deal of weight for his debut in a handicap. Thunder Rock took time to really get into his stride when winning at Yarmouth last time but the second has run well since to boost the form and, with further improvement to come, he looks the one to beat.
