Verdict

KING OF STEEL was only worn down close home by Auguste Rodin in the Epsom Derby. Considering he was having a first run of the season, that was an exceptional performance by Roger Varian’s lightly-raced son of Wootton Bassett who still holds entries in the Irish Derby and King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. He’ll need to win this to fulfil those engagements but appears to have the beating of Artistic Star, Dubai Mile and Arrest, who started favourite at Epsom, on the form book. Continuous disappointed in the Prix du Jockey Club after finishing third in the Dante but his yard has won this in two of the last four years. Relentless Voyager was third in the Italian Derby but appears to be facing much stronger opposition here.
