In depth

Verdict

Mick Channon has enjoyed an extended purple patch in recent weeks and can pick up again with Romeo's Day, who has taken the step up in trip well and looks a more solid proposition than Yashin and Tom Bell, who head the list of alternatives. That said Maria Bonita should handle the track and can go well for each way players looking for a more adventurous play. The Stef Liddiard-trained filly has fared well in claimers of late and does not have much to prove regarding stamina in this company. However, the fact that she is still a maiden is very off putting and others make slightly more appeal. Tom Bell bounced back to from over course and distance last month and will no doubt be a popular choice to follow up. However, he may not want the ground to be too soft and his chance appears to hinge on the state of the weather. Yashin, who is due for a hefty rise in the weights after a series of good efforts, is another that will no doubt attract a fair bit of interest now that he has settled in at his new yard. Paul Blockley has done very well with horses of his type and the market will tell us whether his connections are confident about recouping some of the 12,000gns they paid for him after wining a seller at Leicester eleven days ago. Nevertheless, Romeo's Day is open to a fair bit more improvement and, from a mark of just 55, he has a cracking chance at the weights to win his third consecutive race. Factor in that Romeo's Day is also a previous course winner and his case becomes too hard to ignore in teaming up with a jockey that has got on very well with him since his winning run started.
