In depth

Verdict

Milton Bradley saddles three here, and all of them have a realistic chance of reaching the frame, but we'll just side with General Smith; Laurel Dawn and Cark are others to consider in a competitive sprint handicap. Tony Culhane has been booked to ride General Smith, who recorded a good win on turf at Lingfield a couple of starts ago, but then finished down the field at Musselburgh on his only subsequent start. However, he had no luck in running that day, is certainly capable of better and he remains on a fair mark. Pulse, the mount of Paul Fitzsimons here, has been in excellent form of late, and was bidding for a hat trick when just touched off by Tomthevic at Windsor last time. This powerful finisher has obvious claims, and Mutasawwar, only a couple of lengths behind in fifth that day, cannot be entirely ruled out either. Cark beat Pulse by a neck in a Newcastle claimer last month and has now joined John Balding's stable. He is now four pounds better off with that rival, so is potentially on a fair mark for his return to handicap company. Laurel Dawn has been knocking on the door of late and would have good claims on his recent second to Guns Blazing at Haydock. A tough race to call, but we just side with General Smith to return to form and land the spoils.
