Verdict
Bergamo is selected to beat Beamish Prince and Toejam in a weak looking contest to get proceedings under way. Brian Ellison's eight-year-old has been placed in better company than this on a number of occasions, including when just touched off at Market Rasen in December. His last victory came about this time last year in an all-weather Flat race over two miles, and indeed his latest effort was also on the level at Colwick Park. He reverts to timber fresh after a bit of a break and should make a bold bid to outclass the opposition, the best of whom may be Beamish Prince. George Moore's five-year-old has not won under either code since successful on his debut at Hamilton two years ago, but ran encouragingly at Sedgefield when fifth last month. Toejam is coming to the end of his career now but has put in one or two fair efforts this season. However, in a poor race, Bergamo is the choice.
