Verdict
At first glance this does not appear to be a vintage Derby though it's entirely possible that either CAPE BLANCO or Monterosso could turn out to be well up to standard. Aidan O'Brien is bidding for his fifth successive victory and eighth in all with the Dante Stakes winner, who blotted his copybook when sent to Chantilly for the French Derby. His victory at York over an unlucky Workforce has of course been massively boosted by the runner-up at Epsom and it's worth giving him another chance. Monterosso has been supplemented at huge cost after a very impressive victory in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot where he had shock Epsom runner-up At First Glance back in fourth. O'Brien's Jan Vermeer and Midas Touch, fourth and fifth at Epsom, should reverse placings with stablemate At First Glance here but Johnny Murtagh prefers Cape Blanco and that should be good enough. Chabal was the proverbial mile behind the selection at York when favourite so it's a surprise to see him entered here though that can't have been his true running. Coordinated Cut was quietly fancied at Epsom but never really got involved until too late and will need to show massive progress to take a hand here.
