In depth

Verdict

JAPAN only had to be pushed out to make a winning reappearance in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester. He wasn’t beaten far in the Derby here in 2019 and later won twice at the highest level. Though not at his best last year, he still managed to place in the Coral-Eclipse and has the ability to make life tough for likely hot favourite Al Aasy, who has never raced at this elevated level but has been very impressive in two Group 3 races at Newbury this season. As well as the selection, Aidan O’Brien also runs last year’s Grand Prix de Paris and Hong Kong Vase winner Mogul who was third in last month’s Prix Ganay. Pyledriver won Group 2 races at Ascot and York last year and has had a pipe-opener and he looks a better bet than the fillies Albaflora and Alpinista.
