Verdict

Vaughan, Flamboyant Lad, Maraakeb, Red Lancer and Promotion form our shortlist here, with the vote going to Promotion. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained selection was slightly disappointing when going for back-to-back wins in the Wolferton handicap last time, but he still ran pretty well. From the same mark today, he should run his race. Vaughan cam from off the pace to finish fifth at Royal Ascot at York last time and just a little improvement from that suggests he will be in the thick of things. Grampian was just behind him there and meets on the same terms today. Flamboyant Lad was behind the pair of them on that occasion but it would be no surprise to see Barry Hills' likeable colt bounce back from that today. Following last year's Chester Vase win, the handicapper is now starting to relent with Red Lancer, and he ran better than it first seemed at Royal Ascot last time, although he was behind the selection, but Dunaskin has paid for his successes. Chancellor is not his former high-class self, but he raced with a bit more dash last time, while Etesaal was behind Promotion last time at York. John Gosden's Maraakeb looked promising earlier in the year and he ran a little better than his finishing position last time suggests, He is at the right end of the weights and we expect him to go well. Camrose has been given a chance by the handicapper now and could go well, while, from the Howard Johnson stable, the decent hurdler Motive has also to be granted respect. Finally, Royal Cavalier has won from a higher mark and invariably goes well here, but he looks vulnerable to day, not least to Promotion, who gets our vote here.
